Choose from a variety of different material options. Carpet materials are made up of fibers, and fibers play an important role in how a carpet will function in your space. Some are made to be stain resistant, where others are naturally allergy friendly. They also have a role in the overall look of a carpet. You should consider more than just what color carpet you want. Before purchasing a new carpet you should consider how you use the space and how durable of a fiber you would need.
Types of fibers used in carpets include nylon, polyester, triexta, olefin/polypropylene, and wool.
Nylon is the most common and popular carpet fiber option. Nylon is popular because of its durability and long-lasting qualities. Nylon does need to be treated in order to be resistant to staining.
Polyester is less expensive than nylon but features some of the same durability. Manufacturing technology continues to improve the quality of polyester and make it comparable to the durability of nylon.
Triexta is a newer fiber type, and is inherently durable. Unlike nylon fibers, it does not need to be treated to be stain resistant.
Olefin/polypropylene fibers are perfect for decorative rugs and carpets. We suggest putting these types of rugs and carpets in places around your home that are not heavily trafficked.
Wool is a popular and natural fiber that comes from sheep. Homeowners love wool because not only it is a hypoallergenic option, but it is also easy to clean and maintain. The fibers are dense and help to trap dust and dirt so it can be easily vacuumed up instead of floating in your breathing zone. Click here to learn more about wool!
